Overview
Chichicastenango is home to one of the oldest and most enduring Mayan markets in the world — a living cultural center where ancestral traditions, spirituality, and community life converge. This private one-day experience offers an immersive introduction to Guatemala’s heritage, approached with respect, depth, and thoughtful curation.
The journey begins with private transportation from Guatemala City, passing through scenic highland landscapes framed by mountains and volcanoes before reaching Chichicastenango. Once in town, guests explore the renowned open-air market, where centuries-old traditions continue through vibrant textiles, ceremonial objects, and local craftsmanship.
A central moment of the experience is a visit to Santo Tomás Church, an emblematic site of Mayan and Catholic syncretism. Deeply connected to Mayan cosmovision, this church holds historical significance as the place where the sacred text Popol Vuh was discovered and transcribed in 1701 by Dominican friar Francisco Ximénez, preserving one of the most important narratives of Mayan cosmology.
Throughout the visit, guests gain insight into mayan rituals, spiritual practices, and daily life, allowing for a meaningful connection with one of Guatemala’s most culturally significant destinations. The experience concludes in the late afternoon with a private return to Guatemala City.
Popol Vuh
The Popol Vuh is the sacred book of the K’iche’ Maya and one of the most important texts of Mesoamerican civilization. It preserves the ancient Mayan worldview through narratives of creation, the origin of humanity, and the relationship between gods, nature, and the cosmos.
Originally transmitted orally for generations, the Popol Vuh was transcribed in the early 18th century in Chichicastenango by Dominican friar Francisco Ximénez, ensuring the preservation of this foundational spiritual and cultural legacy. Today, it stands as a profound testament to Mayan philosophy, mythology, and ancestral knowledge.
